How Can The Video Be A Help To Secondary Schools?
While the video has been filmed in parish communities, and not secondary schools, the involvement and active participation of young people in many of the rituals, has made a significant contribution to the video. The video, with its accompanying book, is a unique and excellent resource for School Chaplains, RECs and liturgy teams, for the following reasons:
- It gives teachers and students a 'grass roots' understanding of what liturgy is about, while addressing critical issues about liturgy and youth.
- It demonstrates, through the rituals presented on the video, how creative, powerful and meaningful liturgy can be; showing teachers and students what is possible.
- It provides stimulating discussion, and a creative springboard for preparing and celebrating life-giving liturgy.
- It gives teachers and students confidence and support in preparing liturgies.
- It provides an excellent study resource for Year 12 Students in their unit on liturgy.
Reviews by Secondary Schools of In Memory of You
"In Memory of You" by Monica Brown and Hilary Musgrave rsc, is an excellent resource for schools if used in the right way. It has great potential for the education of RE staff in the area of Liturgy. In my experience as an RE Coordinator, many teachers, both experienced and those new to teaching, lack confidence where liturgy is concerned. Used over several sessions (and I stress several sessions) this video could assist in the building of confidence and most certainly, in providing important background knowledge and theology for these teachers.
Part B of the video is devoted to input by Monica about liturgy and the liturgical documents. The skilled teacher would be able to break this into digestible sections with discussion for senior students. It would offer them the opportunity to reflect in some depth about the practise of their personal faith. I would suggest it as of particular interest to those studying the 'Liturgical Prayer' Unit of the Sydney Archdiocese Catholic Studies course for Year 12 and similar units used by other dioceses.
I would recommend, Part C of the video, 'Viewing the Rituals', particularly as a springboard for the actual planning of school celebrations of the Eucharist with teachers, as well as the student Liturgy Committee. Each ritual models creative interpretation of the specific parts of the Eucharist and allows opportunity for groups to analyse and discuss and be inspired in their own planning of ritual. The accompanying booklet is in itself a valuable resources and is set out in a very user-friendly way".
Kim-Maree Goodwin, REC, Sydney.
“This material is a valuable resource for schools and youth group”.
Fr Frank Martin, Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Cheltenham, Vic."It has excellent content. I see it as a valuable tool for Liturgy Teams… Part C is very good in that it presents rituals for most parts of the Mass and allows for the viewer's creativity to be explored for their own faith / school communities."
Anne Sheehan, Diocesan Liturgy Team, Rockhampton, Qld.
"In Memory of You" will be an invaluable resource in the formation of Liturgy Committees and those responsible for Liturgical preparation.... it provides rich and meaningful examples of liturgical rituals that will speak to the heart of children, youth and adults alike"
